I am so inspired by projects by, for, and about women, so The Goddess Project is something I am very excited about. Holli Rae and Sara Landas have travelled across the country to interview over 100 women about life-changing experiences for this great project. They say that if there is one thing they learned along the documentary journey, "it's that no matter who you are, or what you believe, there is someone out there just waiting to discover their possibilities in your reality."
Holli and Sara have a Kickstarter for their documentary - The Goddess Project. Please be sure to check it out and donate, if you feel moved!
What does Creativity mean to you?
Creativity is the ability to express your unique perspective and manifest your ideas into reality!
How do you expand yourself creatively?
We draw inspiration from traveling within and out into the unknown. We expand creatively by challenging ourselves, being open to new experiences, and learning from people from different walks of life.
Were you creative as a child? If so, how have you evolved through the years? Did anyone encourage you, especially?
“I discovered my love for filmmaking at age 7 when my parents brought home our first camcorder. My hand has been glued to a camera ever since. I attended film school in 2005 and have since worked in many different areas of the industry, all leading me to my true calling, documentary filmmaking. Being able to capture a rare and special moment in time and impart its feeling on the screen is my ultimate passion and the fuel behind all that I create.” -Sara Landas

“From a young age, I started mixing mediums and creating art to evoke emotion in the people around me. I studied visual communications and design in school, but it was not until I met Sara in 2009 and we started collaborating that I fell in love with filmmaking as a powerful medium for storytelling. Five years ago I would have never imagined I would be making a feature-length documentary. It has been an amazing journey combining our skills to co-create more than we ever dreamt possible!” -Holli Rae
What inspires you most?
Connecting with others and seeing them shine!
What turns you on creatively?
Honesty, vision, & authenticity. When people embody their truth and have the courage to share it with the world!
Do you have any gratefulness practices?
We are so fortunate to be born in this time and for all of the love and support we have in our lives! We try to start every day and end each night with gratitude that we are here, alive, and capable!
Do you daydream often? If so, does it inform your work?
Yes! We dream at night as well! Paying attention to those subconscious thoughts gives us a lot of insight into what we need to overcome, work towards, and manifest in our lives!
Is there a Creative, past or present, that you would give just about anything to work with? Who, and why?
We would love to work with Eve Ensler! We are huge admirers of her work and she has been a big supporter of The Goddess Project. We hope to one day collaborate with her in creating something that inspires women and girls worldwide!
How do you care for yourself to ensure you’re available when ideas present themselves?
We both like spending time outside as much as we can. A lot of the work we do involves being in front of a computer for long hours so getting out into the sunshine makes a huge difference in our well being! We also love spending time with good company, cooking delicious vegan meals, and practicing yoga and meditation.
How do you balance life and art effectively? Or, do you?
That’s an art in itself. It’s very different when you’re creating art for yourself versus creating art for a bigger cause. We feel an immense pressure to get our film out into the world but we do our best to take time off and reward ourselves when we can!
How do you deal with creative dry spells? Do you make space for them, or push through?
We don’t stress when things aren't flowing, sometimes you just have to slow down and give yourself some time. Every time Mercury is retrograde we experience this and have learned to cope quite well! ;)
How do you deal with change, especially when it comes to creative mediums and passion?
Change is great. We are both Geminis so we really thrive off of new experiences and environments!
How does criticism affect you?
When it’s constructive and coming from a thoughtful and caring place, we love it! We haven’t had much harsh criticism, but from what we've experienced we have learned to not take it to heart. Usually if someone is heated or upset, it has a lot more to do with them than you.
Has your work ever been copied? If so, how did you deal with it?
Not that we know of. But if so, it’s okay! We need more content like this in the world!
How important is self compassion to your creative process?
Probably the most important thing. We are constantly having to learn new skills and enter into unknown territories, so having deep compassion for ourselves and each other makes all the difference!
Do you have any other mediums you use to express yourself creatively?
We love dancing, collaborating with other artists, playing music, making costumes, having theme parties, and hosting women’s gatherings!
Do you enjoy collaborating, or prefer to work alone?
Collaborating!
Do you work in a studio/space designed specifically for your creativity, or on the spur of the moment/anywhere inspiration strikes?
We work from our home studio now which we've dubbed The Goddess Project HQ! It is a quaint little space covered in chalkboard paint so we can write on the walls as soon as inspiration strikes! When we were shooting our film we lived out of a veggie oil powered school bus and worked out of coffee shops across America.
Is it important for you to have a creative, inspiring environment?
It’s crucial. Our studio is a sacred space.
Do you plan thoroughly for projects, or go with the flow?
Go with the flow, most of the time.
Do you have a preferred way of cataloguing ideas?
We both love to journal and we recently created the world’s largest bubble map cataloguing all of the different concepts discussed in our movie. It takes up a whole wall in our office. We also have 3-5 “To-Do” lists on our desk at all times!
Do you utilize social media? If so, how?
Yes! We have facebook, twitter, instagram, and tumblr pages where we share inspiring content and connect with like-minded folks!
What is your typical day like?
We usually start our mornings with a team meeting in the sunshine to gel pen down our “to-do” list and discuss the day’s plan. We then return to The Goddess Project HQ where we spend the rest of the day editing the film, managing our Kickstarter campaign, and planning for the film’s release!
Do you have any rituals that help to set your creative time and/or space?
We have special Goddess incense we like to light during specific times and we often create vision boards with our dreams & desires and charge them under the moon!
Does spirituality and/or culture play a role in your creativity?
Yes. We try to schedule our plans around current planetary alignments and we both have individual spiritual practices that have a huge impact on our art.
Do you believe art can change the world? If so, how?
Yes! We believe that art leads culture, and if more artists begin to tell stories of hope we can change the world for the better! Movies play a huge role in shaping culture, and we must recognize the importance of telling stories that empower the viewer, rather than perpetuating the problems. We don’t need any more distorted versions of reality telling us we are not good enough. We are perfect as we are, and more films need to encourage that. As more females get behind the camera, the more content will become relevant to women and girls.
What effect do you want your art to have on the world?
The goal of this film is to educate and empower its viewers to leave the theater feeling like they have the ability to overcome their personal obstacles and begin to contribute to the world in a bigger way. The message of this film is “others see their possibilities in your reality,” because we have personally witnessed the incredible transformation that comes when you find a role model who is relevant to you. By showcasing over 100 women from all walks of life in the same film, we aim to bridge the gaps which separate us from one another and show the infinite possibilities that exist when you step into your own power.
What music, if any, plays while you work? What are you listening to at this very moment?
Usually just the sounds of the footage we are editing!
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Nothing happens to you, everything happens for you. Each and every obstacle is perfectly placed for you to discover your divine purpose.
Do you have any advice for aspiring creatives?
If you commit wholeheartedly each day to working towards your dreams, they will eventually come true! All great things take time, confidence, & perseverance, and with that understanding, you can achieve anything you set your mind to!
